from my mid-Atlantic correspondent I just learned this about our ties to the Olympian—

It turns out that both of Michael Phelp’s parents grew up in Westernport and attended Bruce High School, where the father played football and the mother was a cheerleader.  Apparently Phelps has relatives all over Allegany and Garrett counties.  His uncle is an administrator at Frostburg State U.  His grandparents worked at the paper factory in Luke.   Even John Miller is a distant relative……………P

Westernport is twenty-five miles southwest of our hometown, Cumberland, Maryland.

Also–Westernport is about three miles from Piedmont, where Henry Louis Gates grew up.
